Viva Italy

We finally made to Rome after a short detour down to Naples over to the Isle of Capri. Naples is a crazy, chaotic big city with fantastic pizza but two days will do ya! Capri on the other hand is a destination we’d like to spend a bit more time in. The pictures at the end of this post will give you an idea of Capri’s beauty. We actually didn’t spend any time in the town of Capri but on the other side  and much farther up in the smaller town of Anacapri where we took a chair lift up to the very top of the island where the views were even more stunning. We also took a private boat ride with a local guide that took us into lots of grotto’s and allowed us to swim in the gorgeous water. I am a chicken about swimming in the open sea but Kris took him up on it. My foray into the water was at one of the small beaches where I felt more comfortable since my swimming lacks a bit of finesse. It was a great day. On Monday the weather threatened to storm but we decided to tough it out and headed on a train to Pompeii to see the ruins. It was a great decision since the rain wasn’t near as bad as some of the storms we are used to back home. After we decided our feet were weary and we couldn’t look at another old rock- sorry couldn’t resist- we took the local train back to Naples to hop the fast one to Rome. Wow- completely different feel from Naples- almost laid back. Just kidding, it is a wide awake city with that certain flair some cities just ooze. We were exhausted last night when we got in, walked about 15 minutes to our hotel, cleaned up, and went to find some great Roman food with a little vino so we would sleep well. This morning we walked over to the Coliseum and toured it before the crowds mobbed it. Then because it was raining we took a ride around on the Hop on – Hop off bus so we could get an idea of where everything is. Jumped off at the Trevi Fountain so we could throw in our coins. We hope to get back there in the evening with out rain but decided that we should take time now to ensure our return to this fabulous city.  We also had great luck with our ROMA passes which allow to you take all forms of Metro here. We were told not to take the local train (subway) because it is supposed to be scary but it’s not. If you’ve ever been on a subway and understand how big cities are you won’t have any problems. We have almost figured out the various routes to get to more landmarks for the next few days without any hassles. Pantheon, catacombs, and Vatican City- are next on the agenda.
